Boating on the Costa Cálida

The Costa Cálida in Murcia has two very different waters: the shallow, calm Mar Menor lagoon behind the La Manga sandbar, and the open Mediterranean with its rocky capes and coves. Boat days cruise the lagoon and its islands or head outside to the coves of Calblanque, Cabo de Palos and, further south, Águilas.

Where to go by boat

• Mar Menor

  Large, shallow saltwater lagoon with calm water and small islands.

• Isla Grosa

  Volcanic island off La Manga, a protected bird area where landing is not allowed.

• Calblanque

  Regional park of undeveloped beaches and coves south of La Manga.

• Isla del Fraile

  Small island off Águilas with clear water for a swim stop.

Tip: The Mar Menor has speed limits and zones where anchoring is banned to protect its ecosystem, and the Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas marine reserve has restricted zones, so check the rules before you go.
