Boating in Brest

The Rade de Brest is a vast natural harbour linked to the Iroise Sea by a narrow strait, the Goulet, with the Crozon peninsula on its southern side. Inside, the water is sheltered and full of coves and river mouths; days out often cross to Le Fret or run up the Aulne, while Camaret lies just outside the Goulet.

Where to go by boat

  • Camaret-sur-Mer

Fishing port at the tip of the Crozon peninsula with Vauban’s tower on the quay.

  • Pointe des Espagnols

Headland marking the Goulet’s inner end, with wide views over the harbour.

  • Landévennec

Abbey village on a loop of the Aulne estuary.

  • Le Fret

Small harbour on the Crozon side of the roadstead, opposite Brest.

Tip: Currents in the Goulet run strong as the roadstead fills and empties, so pass it with a favourable current and avoid wind against tide, which raises a steep sea.
